QuiXand Fantasy Basketball Rules and Draft Guide
League Management and Overview
The QuiXand Basketball League is free of charge. Season ending prizes will be awarded to teams in the following categories: Best season won/lost record, most total points scored by a team for the season and most pathetic. The playoff winner and playoff runner up will each be awarded prizes. The prizes will be free or cheap or non-existent and certainly pathetic.
A weekly newsletter will be posted weekly once the outcomes have been determined.
The Game
As an owner at the Fantasy Draft, you will select a total of eight players. Each week you pit one center, two forwards and two guards against another coach’s starting lineup. A fantasy team’s total weekly score is generated by its individual NBA player’s performance in their FIRST game during that week. If one of the players that you select to start that week misses his teams’ first game of that week but plays later in that week, we’ll use the results of his performance in the first game in which he plays that week. If he misses all of his teams’ games that week you are obviously out of luck.
Weeks will be from Monday to Sunday. There will be a total of 22 regular season weeks beginning with the week of 29 Oct 2007 thru 4 Nov 2007 and will run for 22 consecutive weeks. This will allow each team to play every team at least twice.
This will only leave two weeks available for playoffs. The top five teams will have a chance to make the playoffs. The 4th seed playoff slot will be determined by a head to head competition between the 4 and 5th place teams at the end of Week 22. Their scores from week 22 will be used to determine which team gets into the playoffs and which team becomes an also-ran.
The first week’s starting lineups will be due by Monday, 29 Oct 2007. The cutoff is at 12:00 AM on Monday, meaning you have until Midnight Pacific time on Sunday nights to change your lineup. It is the coach’s responsibility to make his substitutions on the Yahoo site. Whatever Yahoo says your starting lineup is at 12:01 AM on Monday is the lineup you will compete with that week. A weekly roster will be circulated but in the event of conflicts, the Yahoo lineup will always prevail.
If for some reason you can’t change your lineup in time, an email to the commissioner by the deadline will be acceptable. This is a last resort, however, as I don’t want to have to field a bunch of lineup change requests.
The league will be managed via the Yahoo site for the QuiXand FBA and all Yahoo rules and settings apply except when those rules conflict with the rules as stated here. Yahoo’s Stat Tracker stats will be the first and last word as to a player’s stats.
League Structure
There are 10 teams this year.
At the end of the 22nd week, regular season play will end and the 4 teams will move into the playoffs. On week 23 (1st round of the playoffs) the 1st and 4th seeded teams will play each other; the 2nd and 3rd seeded teams will play each other and the winners will face off on week 24 to determine the 2007-08 Champion.
Tiebreakers:
If there is a tie in the regular season standings it will be settled by whichever team has the highest regular season point total. Should that be a tie as well, the third tie breaker will be a head to head matchup using Week 22’s stats. Should a 4th tie breaker be necessary, there will be another head to head matchup in Week 22 using their players performances in their second game in week 22.
In the event that there is a tie game between two teams during the regular season there will be a second matchup between the tied teams using their players performances in their second game in that week.
Roster Requirements
Your eight-man roster has certain limitations. You must have at least one center, two forwards and two guards. If one of your players gets injured, or is performing poorly, you have the option of cutting the player and picking up a new player from the free agent pool. Again Yahoo rules and settings will apply to free agent pickup and waiver restrictions. It is each coach’s responsibility to familiarize himself with those rules and settings. At no time will any team have more than eight players on their roster – five starters and three bench players.
How to Play
Each week the coaches must start one center, two guards and two forwards. Coaches will pit their lineup against that of another coach as determined by the weekly schedule. Starting lineups are due when and how stated above. The playing week is Monday through Sunday. If coaches fail to change their Yahoo lineup by the deadline, the lineup they used the previous week will be used again! This could prove to be a disaster if you have a player that gets injured. On the other hand, if you intend to make no changes, there is no need to update your lineup.
Scoring
Very basic - points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals are each worth one point. Whatever the total points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals that each player in your starting lineup gets in his first game of the week is your score for the week. QFBA will keep track of these points using Yahoo Stat Tracker for each game. In the event a coach finds a conflicting stat from another source, the Yahoo stat will prevail.
Disputes
The Commissioner will resolve any disagreements that may arise during the course of the season. The method that will be used to resolve the issue is entirely up to the commissioner. In other words, in some cases he may decide the issue should be put to a vote of league members (one vote per team) or he may decide that he alone will make a ruling. The outcome will be made known via email.
Making Trades or Picking Up Free Agents
Trade deadlines as set up in Yahoo rules and settings will apply. Any number of coaches may decide to swap any number of players at any time until the trading deadline. In the event that an owner has more than one team, no trades between those two teams will be allowed.
The league commissioner or a simple majority vote of the owners may veto any trade or consolidating of teams. The commissioner’s veto may be overturned by a majority vote of the owners. In other words, if it appears obvious that one owner is hopelessly out of playoff contention and is in cahoots with another owner to unfairly improve the other team, any one of the other owners may request a vote of all other owners to assess whether or not they agree that there was collusion between those two teams. If so, the trade may not be validated.
The Yahoo system provides for a Can’t Cut list and players listed are chosen by Yahoo based on their performance. The idea is to prevent a poor team from cutting a quality player so that another team may unfairly benefit. In the past we have not used the Can’t Cut list but this year we will, to avoid unseemly disputes. The list can be viewed at any time on the QuiXand Yahoo! site.
Additionally, any personnel move can be challenged by any member of the league and a majority vote of owners will determine the outcome of that challenge. Again, familiarize yourself with the Yahoo rules and setting. You have one day to challenge a personnel move before it becomes final.
Any NBA players not on one of the QFBA teams already may be picked up as a free agent and added to your team provided that you drop one of your players to make room on your roster and provide that he has cleared waivers.
Players cut from a team roster will be returned to the free agent pool and can be picked up by any other team as a free agent, again provided that he has cleared waivers. Trades will no longer be allowed after the trade deadline of 6 March 2007.
Draft Day
The draft will be held via the Internet on Saturday 27 October 2007 at 12:00 Noon PST. Check the Yahoo site for instructions on how to connect. A draft guide and listings of players and their positions are available on Yahoo. Players can only be used in the position or positions listed by Yahoo. The same rules will apply to undrafted free agents. Check the Yahoo listings carefully as some players are listed at more than one position and may be used at any position that Yahoo says he is eligible for. Note that Yahoo may change a player’s position eligibility in the course of the season based on how that player is used on the real NBA.
Draft order will be determined by randomly by Yahoo prior to the start of the draft. You can use Yahoo’s ranking of players to aid in drafting or you may rank the players yourself. If you are unable to log on for the live draft, Yahoo will make your selections for you based on the ranking that you have assigned.
OK, that’s it folks. If you have any questions, check the rules and settings on Yahoo before you bug the Commish. If you can’t find your answer there, email the Commish at parrotdead@xmission.com.
Good Luck!

FBA Rag – 2007-8 Preseason Edition
2007-08 Draft Day Report Card (A biased guy’s opinion)
By: Clay Moyle – AKA Incubus
In order of 1st round draft position:
FJ Cruisers B-/C+ Garnett is a stud, and this team also ended up with some other very nice players in Iverson, Al Jefferson, and Josh Howard. However, based upon where they were positioned in the draft and who was available when some of their picks were made I think they could have done much better. I didn’t understand picking Durant in the 2nd round at all. Here are a few players that were passed up during the draft. In the 2nd round when Durant was selected players such as Paul Pierce, Iguodala, Ming, Dwight Howard, McGrady, Baron Davis, etc. were all available. In the 6th round when Dalembert was picked they passed over players like Maggette and David West who I think would have been very good selections. The bench looks pretty weak to me.
SeaGals D- There has to be an FBA rookie manning the helm of this ship. Carmelo Anthony is a great player, but I was very surprised to see him taken over both Kobe Bryant and Lebron James, and I’m sure the Chief will be thrilled to learn that Bryant fell into his lap at # 3. Frankly, I don’t like any of the picks by this team after Anthony. I think they’re gonna be in a world of hurt with this roster. I’ve got some nice pieces to trade but other than Anthony there isn’t a single guy on this team I think I’d want.
Rednicks B/B- Friggin Chief, he ranks his picks on Yahoo and goes out of town to leave Yahoo to make those picks for him and damned if he doesn’t end up looking pretty well. I cursed aloud when the SeaGals took Anthony with the first pick in the draft because I knew that meant the Chief would get either Kobe or Lebron. I’m sure he’ll love having Kobe in his lineup this year. Josh Smith could be better than most people think this year, and he also got Paul Pierce and Jason Richardson. There are some question marks with this team though. I’m not quite sure what Pierce’s numbers will be like now that he’s got to share the ball with Ray Allen and Garnett. And Richardson is on a new team. The Chief could also be vulnerable at center where my guess is that he won’t get an average of over 30 points from either Okafor or Kaman. I know a guy that is loaded with center eligible players (pssst it’s me) but it’s hard to imagine the Chief and Incubus doing a deal together.
Dubers B- Like the Rednicks, I think the Dubers are vulnerable at the center position where Biedrins and Chandler might only produce averages in the range of 25 FBA points per game. Lebron James is an FBA superstar. Dwayne Wade may start out slowly when he returns in mid-November and it remains to be seen if, or how quickly, he might return to form. Iguodala is a stud but I think that Dwight Howard would have been a better pick than him for this team. I also think they will come to realize that there were a few better players available than Butler when he was chosen, even though Butler is a decent player. Maggette should be a big producer at either a guard or forward position this season now that he’s going to be a starter for the Clippers. Hey coach, ya snagged Maggette right before I was hoping to get him. When you decide you can’t live with your production at the center position let’s talk.
FrontRunners B The FrontRunners look like they can put a pretty formidable starting lineup on the floor in Stoudemire, Rashard Lewis, Gerald Wallace, Chris Paul, and Deron Williams. The pickup of Williams in round 5 was a sweet move. It will be interesting to see how well the choice of Rashard Lewis plays out. Personally, I’m not sold on the former Sonic yet and had a number of other players that were still available ranked ahead of him, such as Ming, D. Howard, McGrady, Baron Davis, Joe Johnson, and Michael Redd. I think the bench looks a little thin for this team as well.
Jitterbugz C+ They landed the reigning MVP of the NBA in Nowitski, but after that I didn’t think this team made out so well. They took Jason Kidd with the 15th pick in the draft and I just don’t think the 35 year old point guard warrants that high of a selection any more. Look at some of the names they passed up when they took Kidd: Chris Paul, Dwayne Wade, Iverson, Paul Pierce, Ming, D. Howard, McGrady, etc. I think that pick is going to haunt them all season long. Luckily for them though Ming was still available when their 3rd round pick rolled around. Maybe they can thank the bonehead selection of Delonte West by the SeaGals early in the 3rd round for Ming still being available. I don’t think the choice of Billups in round four was so hot either. I’m not all that impressed with this team, but they do have Nowitski and Ming, and some decent talent in Kidd, Artest, Billups, and David West to go along with those two.
Incubus B/B+ Like I said, I’m biased. I tried to select who I thought were the best players available, not necessarily filling in positions, and I think I ended up with as much overall talent on my roster as anyone in Chris Bosh, Arenas, Dwight Howard, Jermaine O’Neal, Zach Randolph, LaMarcus Aldridge, Ben Gordon and Shaq. I think Aldridge is going to be better than a lot of people think. I also ended up with five players on the roster that are eligible to play center so have some possible bargaining chips to play with when any teams feel the need to upgrade that position, or forward. The sole weakness with this team in my mind is at guard. Arena’s is great, but the only other guard drafted was Ben Gordon. He averaged around 29 fantasy points/game last year. That might be fine based on the potential production from the rest of the team, but I just missed out on the chance to draft both Deron Williams and later Maggette and I would have been much happier to land either of those two, especially Williams. I also have no backup guard at this point.
Clutch City B Nice looking team for Tobias. He landed Tim Duncan, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, and Michael Redd. That seems like pretty high octane scoring potential there, although Duncan can sometimes disappoint. My only criticism of their draft might be the choice of Odom, presently injured, over the likes of Deng, and a few others. I’m not a fan of either Jason Terry or Kirilenko and question the strength of the bench on this team, but I still think this is one of Clutch’s better teams heading into a season.
Didigetagood…C+ Ummmm, I don’t know if you got a good team or not yet. Maybe it will be better than I think, but right now I think it’s a middle of the pack kind of team. I’m not that big a fan of Marion and would have taken either Gasol or Carlos Boozer instead of him. I’m also not as high on Nash as some others, and would have taken someone like Vince Carter, Arenas, Dwayne Wake, or any number of other guys over him. Bargnani might be a good producer, don’t know yet, but I heard that Brandon Roy might have a problem with a heel and overall this isn’t a team that I would fear all that much, though they are certainly capable of putting a hurt on another team from time to time, as are most teams.
Cap’n’Parrot B+ And that brings us to the good Cap’n, picking in the spot the Chief is accustomed to picking from, last in the first round. The Cap’n can only hope it works out as well for him as it did for the Chief last year. Gotta love the first two picks by this team, Gasol and Boozer, as that’s exactly who I would have taken at that time with those two picks and based upon who was available. I can’t criticize the teams third pick either, Baron Davis was a solid choice, and Joe Johnson immediately afterward would seem to be a very good choice as well. You just knew the Cap’n had to break down and take someone from the Jazz by the 5th round and sure enough he took the C/F eligible Okur. A very nice pick for a 5th round selection and a guy that can play two positions. Getting a guy like Deng as low as the 6th round just might be a steal, and Heinrich and Mo Williams with the last two picks provides some good depth at guard. Nicely done Captain.
