2007-8 QFBA Rules

QuiXand Fantasy Basketball Rules and Draft Guide

League Management and Overview

The QuiXand Basketball League is free of charge. Season ending prizes will be awarded to teams in the following categories: Best season won/lost record, most total points scored by a team for the season and most pathetic. The playoff winner and playoff runner up will each be awarded prizes. The prizes will be free or cheap or non-existent and certainly pathetic.

A weekly newsletter will be posted weekly once the outcomes have been determined.

The Game

As an owner at the Fantasy Draft, you will select a total of eight players. Each week you pit one center, two forwards and two guards against another coach’s starting lineup. A fantasy team’s total weekly score is generated by its individual NBA player’s performance in their FIRST game during that week. If one of the players that you select to start that week misses his teams’ first game of that week but plays later in that week, we’ll use the results of his performance in the first game in which he plays that week. If he misses all of his teams’ games that week you are obviously out of luck.

Weeks will be from Monday to Sunday. There will be a total of 22 regular season weeks beginning with the week of 29 Oct 2007 thru 4 Nov 2007 and will run for 22 consecutive weeks. This will allow each team to play every team at least twice.

This will only leave two weeks available for playoffs. The top five teams will have a chance to make the playoffs. The 4th seed playoff slot will be determined by a head to head competition between the 4 and 5th place teams at the end of Week 22. Their scores from week 22 will be used to determine which team gets into the playoffs and which team becomes an also-ran.

The first week’s starting lineups will be due by Monday, 29 Oct 2007. The cutoff is at 12:00 AM on Monday, meaning you have until Midnight Pacific time on Sunday nights to change your lineup. It is the coach’s responsibility to make his substitutions on the Yahoo site. Whatever Yahoo says your starting lineup is at 12:01 AM on Monday is the lineup you will compete with that week. A weekly roster will be circulated but in the event of conflicts, the Yahoo lineup will always prevail.

If for some reason you can’t change your lineup in time, an email to the commissioner by the deadline will be acceptable. This is a last resort, however, as I don’t want to have to field a bunch of lineup change requests.

The league will be managed via the Yahoo site for the QuiXand FBA and all Yahoo rules and settings apply except when those rules conflict with the rules as stated here. Yahoo’s Stat Tracker stats will be the first and last word as to a player’s stats.

League Structure

There are 10 teams this year.

At the end of the 22nd week, regular season play will end and the 4 teams will move into the playoffs. On week 23 (1st round of the playoffs) the 1st and 4th seeded teams will play each other; the 2nd and 3rd seeded teams will play each other and the winners will face off on week 24 to determine the 2007-08 Champion.

Tiebreakers:

If there is a tie in the regular season standings it will be settled by whichever team has the highest regular season point total. Should that be a tie as well, the third tie breaker will be a head to head matchup using Week 22’s stats. Should a 4th tie breaker be necessary, there will be another head to head matchup in Week 22 using their players performances in their second game in week 22.

In the event that there is a tie game between two teams during the regular season there will be a second matchup between the tied teams using their players performances in their second game in that week.

Roster Requirements

Your eight-man roster has certain limitations. You must have at least one center, two forwards and two guards. If one of your players gets injured, or is performing poorly, you have the option of cutting the player and picking up a new player from the free agent pool. Again Yahoo rules and settings will apply to free agent pickup and waiver restrictions. It is each coach’s responsibility to familiarize himself with those rules and settings. At no time will any team have more than eight players on their roster – five starters and three bench players.

How to Play

Each week the coaches must start one center, two guards and two forwards. Coaches will pit their lineup against that of another coach as determined by the weekly schedule. Starting lineups are due when and how stated above. The playing week is Monday through Sunday. If coaches fail to change their Yahoo lineup by the deadline, the lineup they used the previous week will be used again! This could prove to be a disaster if you have a player that gets injured. On the other hand, if you intend to make no changes, there is no need to update your lineup.

Scoring

Very basic - points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals are each worth one point. Whatever the total points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals that each player in your starting lineup gets in his first game of the week is your score for the week. QFBA will keep track of these points using Yahoo Stat Tracker for each game. In the event a coach finds a conflicting stat from another source, the Yahoo stat will prevail.

Disputes

The Commissioner will resolve any disagreements that may arise during the course of the season. The method that will be used to resolve the issue is entirely up to the commissioner. In other words, in some cases he may decide the issue should be put to a vote of league members (one vote per team) or he may decide that he alone will make a ruling. The outcome will be made known via email.

Making Trades or Picking Up Free Agents

Trade deadlines as set up in Yahoo rules and settings will apply. Any number of coaches may decide to swap any number of players at any time until the trading deadline. In the event that an owner has more than one team, no trades between those two teams will be allowed.

The league commissioner or a simple majority vote of the owners may veto any trade or consolidating of teams. The commissioner’s veto may be overturned by a majority vote of the owners. In other words, if it appears obvious that one owner is hopelessly out of playoff contention and is in cahoots with another owner to unfairly improve the other team, any one of the other owners may request a vote of all other owners to assess whether or not they agree that there was collusion between those two teams. If so, the trade may not be validated.

The Yahoo system provides for a Can’t Cut list and players listed are chosen by Yahoo based on their performance. The idea is to prevent a poor team from cutting a quality player so that another team may unfairly benefit. In the past we have not used the Can’t Cut list but this year we will, to avoid unseemly disputes. The list can be viewed at any time on the QuiXand Yahoo! site.

Additionally, any personnel move can be challenged by any member of the league and a majority vote of owners will determine the outcome of that challenge. Again, familiarize yourself with the Yahoo rules and setting. You have one day to challenge a personnel move before it becomes final.

Any NBA players not on one of the QFBA teams already may be picked up as a free agent and added to your team provided that you drop one of your players to make room on your roster and provide that he has cleared waivers.

Players cut from a team roster will be returned to the free agent pool and can be picked up by any other team as a free agent, again provided that he has cleared waivers. Trades will no longer be allowed after the trade deadline of 6 March 2007.

Draft Day

The draft will be held via the Internet on Saturday 27 October 2007 at 12:00 Noon PST. Check the Yahoo site for instructions on how to connect. A draft guide and listings of players and their positions are available on Yahoo. Players can only be used in the position or positions listed by Yahoo. The same rules will apply to undrafted free agents. Check the Yahoo listings carefully as some players are listed at more than one position and may be used at any position that Yahoo says he is eligible for. Note that Yahoo may change a player’s position eligibility in the course of the season based on how that player is used on the real NBA.

Draft order will be determined by randomly by Yahoo prior to the start of the draft. You can use Yahoo’s ranking of players to aid in drafting or you may rank the players yourself. If you are unable to log on for the live draft, Yahoo will make your selections for you based on the ranking that you have assigned.

OK, that’s it folks. If you have any questions, check the rules and settings on Yahoo before you bug the Commish. If you can’t find your answer there, email the Commish at parrotdead@xmission.com.

Good Luck!
